At the Army Aviation Centre in Middle Wallop, His Majesty King Charles has officially handed over the prestigious role of Colonel-in-Chief of the Army Air Corps to His Royal Highness Prince William. This significant event marks a symbolic transition of leadership within the regiment.
In August 2023, following His Majesty’s accession to the throne, King Charles announced several military appointments, including the appointment of Prince William as the new Colonel-in-Chief. The role had been held by King Charles himself, as Prince of Wales, for an impressive 31 years.
As the Sovereign and Head of the Armed Forces, King Charles has a distinguished military background. He served in both the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force, making him a respected veteran. Over the years, he has presented operational service medals to members of the Army Air Corps, demonstrating his commitment to the regiment.
The handover ceremony took place at Middle Wallop, where King Charles met with a Guard of Honour and Lieutenant General Sir Nicholas Borton, the Colonel Commandant of the Army Air Corps. Together, they toured The Army Flying Museum, which chronicles British army flying from its early days of military ballooning to the modern Army Air Corps.
During the visit, King Charles met veterans and their families, unveiling a plaque commemorating the arrival of the first Apache AH Mk.1 to be installed in a UK museum. This Apache helicopter had played a crucial role in the Battle of Jugroom Fort, Afghanistan, in 2007.
Following the museum visit, King Charles walked across the airfield to the Middle Wallop Control Tower, where he officially handed over the role to Prince William. The Prince of Wales, now Colonel-in-Chief, has a strong affiliation with the Armed Forces. He previously served as a Platoon Commander in The Blues and Royals and completed flying training in the Royal Air Force. His Royal Highness also spent three years as an RAF Search and Rescue pilot at RAF Valley in Anglesey, Wales.
Prince William received a briefing on the Army Air Corps’ current work, observed training and operational aircraft, and met with aircrew and ground staff. His commitment to the regiment ensures a seamless transition and continued excellence in leadership.
In his parting words, King Charles expressed both joy and sadness: “Let me just say what a great joy it is to be with you, even briefly, on this occasion. But also, it is tinged with great sadness after 32 years of knowing you all, admiring your many activities and achievements through the time that I’ve been lucky enough to be Colonel-in-Chief of the Army Air Corps.” With this historic handover, Prince William steps into a role that carries immense responsibility and tradition. The Army Air Corps looks forward to his leadership and continued dedication.
