The President of the United States of America – State Visit

 

The 45th president of the United States of America, Donald Trump, Visits Buckingham Palace during his 3-day state visit to the UK.

 

The President is here to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings which started the liberation of Europe  in June 1944 and involved mainly British, American,  and Canadian troops.

The President attended a state banquet and sat alongside Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the 2nd. There were also around 170 other guests in attendance. These included the current UK prime minister, Teresa May and US ambassador Woody Johnson. As well as the first lady, Melania, the presidents four children were also there.

During the Queen’s speech she said,

“Both Britain and the United States of America were celebrating an alliance which had ensured the safety and prosperity of both our peoples for decades”.

“I am confident our common values and shared interests will continue to unite us”.

The US President, Donald Trump, then said in his speech

“In that dark hour, the people of this nation showed the world what it means to be British”. He also added “their bravery ensured that the destiny of the country remained in your own hands”.

The President concluded this speech with a toast to…

“”the eternal friendship of our people, the vitality of our nations and to the long-cherished and truly remarkable reign of Her Majesty the Queen”.

President Trump will join the Queen again today, the last day of this historic state visit, in Portsmouth. This is where the 75th anniversary D-Day landings commemorations will take place.

They will be joined by representatives and world leaders from countries who were involved in the fight for liberation of Europe during World War 2.
